Colonoscopy Doctor

At this time, colorectal cancer is among the most common cancer diagnoses. It is the 4th-most diagnosed cancer among men, and 3rd among women. We recommend that most patients begin seeing a colonoscopy doctor for regular screenings at the age of 45. For high risk individuals, such as those with conditions like Crohn’s, we recommend they begin regular screenings much earlier.

A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor uses a camera on the end of a flexible tube to examine the inner lining of the bowels. The tube blows oxygen or carbon dioxide to expand the channel and make examination easier. The doctor will be checking for bundles of overgrown cells called polyps. While polyps themselves are benign, over time they can turn into cancerous growths. If polyps are found, your colonoscopy doctor will remove them. Other tissue samples may be taken for further analysis. Many patients who develop polyps will see them return later on, so periodic screenings to check for them are recommended by many doctors.

The colonoscopy procedure itself is safe and short. On average, the procedure will last between 30 and 60 minutes. The patient is given a sedative and pain medication to ease discomfort during the examination. Even though the colonoscopy itself does not take long, patients are recommended to spend the rest of the day at home recovering. It can take an entire day for the effects of the medication to wear off. Arrange transportation home from the clinic after your procedure, as it will not be safe for you to drive a vehicle. Do not attempt to go to work or any other place afterward.

Regular exercise and a diet high in fruits and vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Consider eating less red meat if you consume a lot of it. Keeping a healthy weight will help as well, as obesity is a known risk factor. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption contribute heavily to your chances of developing colorectal cancer. Limit your alcohol consumption, and ask your doctor about products that can help you stop smoking.
